Owner's Manual: Hanging the Umbrella With a Crane, if You Must
Listen up before you start: Once you hang it on a crane, this ain't a regular umbrella any longer. It's an overhead load; treat it like one. Safety first, as death or serious bodily harm can occur.
- Make sure the top ball is nice and tight. If you hang your umbrella regularly, please put a 1" - 1 ¼” set screw on the cap like in the picture to avoid the cap unscrewing itself with the wind when hoisted above you. The threads are rated at over 200lbs, so they will not shear. However, they can come unscrewed.
- Run your wire rope. Thread a heavy-duty wire rope through the pre-drilled hole in the umbrella knob. Don't skimp here. This ain't the place for baling wire or paracord. Get something rated for the load.
- Hang it on the hook. Slide that wire loop right onto the crane hook. Make sure it's seated all the way in the throat, not just perched on the tip. Most cranes have a swivel hook, which helps keep the cap from coming unscrewed.
Wind's gonna do what wind does, and over time it can work that knob loose if it ain't snug down properly or set-screwed in place. So, before you hoist it, double-check your set screw and your wire. If anything feels loose, tighten it up.
Bottom line: HANG IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
